Definition of the Triflash - also known as the light triangle - and its use

triflash

What is a triflash?

The triflash designates a folding luminous triangle equipped with 3 signal lights.

Retro-reflective, this pre-signalling object is used on industrial vehicles (intervention, work or service vehicles) to warn users of an intervention. The triflash consists of an AK5 panel and 3 synchronised R2 type beacon lights. In the French standard, this is the symbol used since 1952 to signal a work zone.

Why use a light triangle?

The regulations (articles 122C and 131C relating to road signs) impose several measures on all mobile equipment operating on roads open to traffic, including the obligation to display signs. The luminous triflash enables this ministerial instruction to be complied with; it must be affixed to all professional vehicles.

Triflash: which vehicles are affected by the regulation?

More specifically, the vehicles affected by the road signage measures are

  • Intervention and work vehicles, moving slowly or stopped on a roadway open to traffic (or on a hard shoulder).
  • Unmarked light vehicles, not assigned to intervention missions but required to park on the hard shoulder or to enter a work zone

However, some road vehicles are not required to display a triflash - such as watering machines, sweepers and refuse collection vehicles. To be legal, the AK5 sign that makes up the triflash must

  • Be visible from the front and rear of the vehicle.
  • Be 500 mm (or 700 mm on a side) depending on the gross vehicle weight (GVW or GVWR). The GVW is the total weight of the vehicle and its load. In short: GVW = GVW (unladen weight) + GC (payload).
  • The Triflash 500 mm or TLP 500 is designed for vehicles with a GVW of less than 3.5 tons
  • The Triflash 700 mm or TLP 700 is designed for vehicles with a GVW of more than 3.5 tons

Vignal SESALY's LED triflash: a quality light triangle

Expert in the design of on-board solutions, Vignal Group offers professionals unique and diversified ranges of LED triflash.

What are the advantages of the new generation Vignal Group triflash?

The LED triflash ranges are manufactured in Switzerland and in France according to the standards and regulations governing road signs. Approved, our LED lighting solutions offer several advantages:

  • Lightness: the new generation models are 25% lighter than standard triangles.
  • High luminous intensity: high-power LEDs provide 2.5 times more luminosity than conventional triflash.
  • Increased resistance to shocks and vibrations.
  • High light output.
  • More compact structure.
  • Lifespan over 100,000 hours (and 3-year warranty).
  • Available in Class 1 or 2.
  • Available with manual lift with cord or electric lift, i.e., motorized, for greater ease and simplicity.
  • Available with different fixing methods: screw-on, glue-on for permanent use or magnetic for temporary use.

To evenly distribute the weight of the triflash on the vehicle, there are several mounting plate models. Vehicles in front of a construction site must also be equipped with additional signage consisting of R65 and EMC approved beacons, as well as approved red and white marking strips.
